Kendo vs Naginatajutsu Practical Demonstration - In-house
Ainachra & Ari
You shift in your feet, standing awkwardly in a semi-circle of seven people lined around Ainachra and Ari. There's a moment of near-silence as they put all their armor on besides their helmet, sitting in seiza. Despite all of the onlookers standing, you notice that on the very left of the group, one man is kneeling down, aggressively scribbling on their journal. You chalk it up to be that they're probably just a journalist.
"You may noticed that we're using shinai," Ainachra raises her voice, holding up her bamboo sword. "This is a demonstration, so we won't be using our sharp blades." She walks over to the far wall, and picks up a katana, and unsheathes it. "This will kill you, obviously."
Ari joins in, "Our armor was sewn by a seamstress on Level 11, and forged with scrap metal by a blacksmith."
Ainachra yells "Do!" and lunges at Ari, swinging her shinai into the side of Ari. The strike rings out, and to your surprise, neither flinch.
"If Ainachra there used her sharp blade, I would get injured. This armor is meant for sparring."
Quiet murmurs sweep across the onlookers. One raises their hand, "Why did you yell when you swung your sword?"
Ari steps back to let Ainachra in the center. "Good question. In kendo, we name our targets before hitting them. Yelling helps give an explosive power to our swings, and forces us to remember to breathe. So tell me, would I practically do this in real combat?"
"No…?" You respond, "You would think calling out your targets would make it easier to dodge."
Ari jumps in, "Not exactly. It's because it could attract more enemies, more often than not, enemies." She pauses for a moment. "Any other questions before we begin?"
The journalist, still on the floor, calls out, "Why use a close-ranged weapon? How can that be effective against entities?"
Ari opens her mouth to speak, but Ainachra bumps her on the shoulder, whispering something. Ari obliges, and lets Ainachra answer, "You're question is valid. Especially with my katana, I can't say that it would be better than say, a gun or a bow." The journalist nods, "However, swords are weapons that have been used for many ages in the Frontrooms, and it requires no ammunition and little maintenance. Although there isn't that much range, I'd say I'm far better of with a katana than without."
Ainachra smiles; then you and the other onlookers chuckle. The journalist aggressively mutters, "Thank you." While continuing to scribble down notes in his journal.
