As you go about your life, it ends very quickly. The normal becomes unusual, and the strange becomes a monotonous life. Everything you've known has been ripped away from your grasps, never to be seen again as you no-clip into the Backrooms.

You find yourself in the pale-yellow halls of Level 0. The lights buzz, a tone so monotonous and self-similar that there is no way you could possibly block it out. You have no clue of what you could possibly do in this situation.

What do you do?
Walk and search the area.
Run and search the area.

You weren't supposed to be here.

I know what you are doing.

Begone from my sight.

Ending NULL

You walk and decide to search your surroundings. The high pitch hum-buzz of the lights is so loud, it wriggles throughout your vision. The self similar view of your surroundings start to change. Black figures scurry across your peripherals.

What do you do?
Follow the figures carefully.
Run to the figures.

You follow the black, shadowy figures. They get more prominent, but never closer.

You need to know.
Follow the figures.

Darkness and red creeps further upon your vision. The lights get louder. Your eyelids twitch and you frantically look around behind you. There's something there that you can't see. I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.

You completely and utterly lose your mind. You die.
Ending 1/?.

You run, to search for answers. Down the twisting and turning rooms and corridors, you slip. Falling over after skidding on the wet carpet, you dive head-first into a wall. You grit you teeth for the pain to come, but it doesn't. You look at your surroundings, and it's changed.

The concrete walls, floors, and tall ceilings surround you. You've entered the less monotonous halls of Level 1. The change is startling, to say the least. You decide that your only option is to explore. The far walls on both sides of you are your guide, but it suddenly and unexpectedly splits open into two paths.

One path, your left, is well lit, and you hear noises of various tones. The sounds seem to be coming from far enough away, that you cannot discern the source of it. On the other hand, to the right, is a path that is lit, but not as bright as the other. From this path, you hear no strange noises, just the general background noise of the area. There is no path ahead of you, which feels odd.

What do you do?
Take the left path.
Take the right path.

You take the left path. The noises get louder, and closer. Instead of being indistinct noises and clatters, you start to hear voices. Not just any voices, but real voices. Any sway of mind that you have faced earlier, is gone in an instant. As you pace eagerly closer, you start to make out a camp, of some kind. Along with the camp, is actual people. Real life people. You can't believe it!

One person, a teenager, probably only a couple years older than you, demands, "Who are you? What is your name?"

What do you do?
Say your name.
Conceal your identity.
Stay silent.

You ask this burning question that has been tampering your mind since you've first seem them. "Who are you guys? What do you do?"

"We are The M.E.G. We work for the peace of society in the Backrooms, but mostly just surviving. We tend to help all that won't hurt us, and we will welcome you, too."

Too late to go back now, you decide to yourself. "Thank you!" You say, kindly and warmly, as you walk towards them to shake their hand. A firm handshake, accompanied by non-menacing locked eyesight, is the best way to introduce yourself.

"If you haven't understood by now, you are in the Backrooms." He says, with a stern, non-aggravated, voice. "There are people who want to live the same kind of life they did before. No shame to them, we all feel this way. But there are the explorers. The wild ones that risk their life for the thrill of meaning something." They talk as they walk into this makeshift camp, a surprisingly crowded area. "This is M.E.G. Base Alpha, the home to many, many, wanderers. I want you to make your decision by morning. Do you want to be a civilian, living whatever life you can, or will you seize the opportunity to have self worth. Become something more, and of course, help many other people." We've come to a tent, and he gestures towards it.

I ask, "What's your name?" As I unzip the tent, and crawl inside.

"I'm Joshua, and I hope to make your acquaintance." He gives an honest smile of a friend. "See you tomorrow!"

Now, as you rest in a cot, you have to make your choice.

What do you do?
Become an explorer.
Stay as a civilian.

"Good choice!" Joshua says, excitedly. "Of course, it's not going to be as easy as one choice. You will have to take the Explorer Trials, an annual test that all explorers take to measure your capability and reliability. There are actually 3 different tests, the beginner test on Level 1.1. The intermediate test on Level 3, and the advanced test, which you are required to pass to become a leader, on various different levels."

This is a lot to take in, just as you are waking up. Barely any of it sticks in your mind as you rise from your cot. "O-okay. Give me a second to process that." You walk out of the tent you slept in. People already seem to be working hard, which you can't understand, because you just barely woke up.

"Yeah, of course." Joshua responds. He walks towards what looks to be a cafeteria, and I follow. "You'll have to start at the beginner test. Everyone does."

"What will I have to do?" You ask.

"All you have to do is explore Level 1.1 past Sector 2. That level gets progressively more dangerous as you go, but you shouldn't experience that much harm."

"Cool." You say. You sit at a table that vaguely reminds you of cafeteria tables from your schooldays. "What's for food?"

"It differs everyday, but we always have breakfast and dinner as an organized meal." Joshua says, as he sits across the table from you. "We get various actual food imported from other levels-you can thank the cafeteria manager for that-but lunch is just various items and snacks that fulfil hunger until you get to a safer level." He pauses, looking thoughtful, "I'm not sure what's for breakfast today, but I can assume it's some kind of oats."

You get up, then walk over to where it seems food is being served. It's a hot bowl of plain oats. One of the cafeteria worker says "Nothin' interesting today I'm afraid." Even though it's boring, and tastes bland, you don't complain for a bowl of hot food.

"Yeah." You respond. "Just got here, in fact."

"Okay, follow me." They say, as they walk away, southwards. Joshua and I follow. Eventually, you make to a sign, labelled "Level 1.1" They walk into a corridor, which the sign points to, and you follow.

Commit.
Follow.

"Okay, you have to make it to Sector 2. How we will know this, is if you talk to the men at Outpost 2" The instructor points at a map of the level. "Make it to the end of that, and you pass. Feel free to turn back in emergencies." He hands you a bottle of almond water, a couple energy bars, a backpack, and a flashlight. "Use any of these if you need, but to exceed, bring back more. Collecting resources is a valuable skill after all."

You look to the seemingly-endless corridor. It speaks to you unlike the other levels. You can think of 2 things to do, find resources now, or later.

What do you do?
Walk, searching for resources.
Run, to complete the objective.

As you slowly meander across the hall, you look for any sort of supplies you can get your hands on. You find multiple crates full of supplies, like almond water, food, and a few batteries, all of which you put into your backpack. You keep going through the halls, all varying in description and detail.

After what could have been anywhere from hours to minutes, you see ahead a somewhat harsh change from your surroundings. You think back to the simplified map you were shown. That must be sector 2, you think. You've made it to sector 2 now, and there is an odd energy inside of it. You walk up to a man, who should be from the M.E.G. and say "I've made it here, I am taking the Explorer Trials."

"Good work." They state plainly. "You can head back to Level 1 now."

What do you do?
Return.
Continue walking further.

You start heading back to the way you came. Nothing of much interest, as it is almost, if not exactly, the same as before. The walk could be hours, it might not be. Eventually, you get to the place where you entered, both the instructor and Joshua was waiting for you.

"Good job!" Joshua says, enthusiastically. It comes a shock, because they could have been waiting for hours. "I heard the good news!"

"Thanks!" You respond, "It was-"

"What resources do you have?" The instructor interrupts.

"Oh," you say in mild annoyance, as you take out your backpack. "I brought some more materials back."

The instructor looks at each item, marking it down. "You have enough material to be eligible to take the intermediate test."

"Nice!" Joshua says, as he puts is hand for a high five. You don't want to leave him hanging, so you give it. He smiles like a true friend, and you can hardly not agree with it. The exhaustment that has built up suddenly releases, and fatigue shows.

You take a sigh of relief, gesturing your hand up to Joshua to not be rude. You follow the instructor as he moves to the exit of this Sub-Level.

Alas, relief.
Follow the instructor.

You ignore their instructions plainly, and continue walking past them. They suddenly grab your shoulder. "I wouldn't do that if I were you." They say.

"Why not?" You ask, brushing off their hand.

"As you continue on, it get's progressively more dangerous." He pauses, looking at you. "I could probably get to sector 3, but no further, though seeing that you are a new explorer, I would highly not recommend going further through sector 2."

"Okay. Thanks for letting me know." You say, highly reluctantly.

Listen to instructions.
Turn back.

You decide to get this over with, and start jogging. Knowing it will take some time, you decided sprinting wasn't the best option. You see the hallway whizzing by, it's all a blur like your perception of time. It's really been this way since you got here, you think back. Not even in the Backrooms for long, and you can't recall what's yesterday, or the day before. You shake it off.

Hours pass, and you are barely able to keep the pace. Drinking some of the Almond Water, you notice it's a weird mixture of flavors and the absence of flavors. You don't let any thoughts besides the success hold you. The objective is there. You can feel it. Almost.

You see a man, waiting, as you run up to them, panting and clearly out of breath, they say "Good work." They say it with a monotonous tone, like they've done it this a thousand times, and add "You can head back to level 1 now."

You want to get this over with.
Turn back.

You start heading back to the way you came. Nothing of much interest, as it is almost, if not exactly, the same as before. The run for be hours, the same time it took to get to the objective. Eventually, you get to the place where you entered, both the instructor and Joshua was waiting for you.

"Good job!" Joshua says, enthusiastically, and in mild shock. "I heard the good news! That was quick!"

"Thanks!" You respond, barely panting out the words, "It was-"

"What resources do you have?" The instructor interrupts.

"Oh," you say in mild annoyance, as you take out your backpack. "I used some."

The instructor looks at each item, marking it down. "You do not have enough material to be eligible to take the intermediate test."

"Aw! Better luck next year!" Joshua says, as he smiles like a true friend, and you can hardly not agree with it.

You take a sigh of relief and exhaustion, gesturing your hand up to Joshua to not be rude. You follow the instructor as he moves to the exit of this Sub-Level.

Alas, relief.
Follow the instructor.

"I guess you've made your decision." Joshua says. "You can, and most likely will, stay here, but you will need a job. Yeah, don't give me that look. Explorers don't do all the work, if your a civilian, that just means you've decided to only stay in these safe levels."

"Thank you Joshua." You respond. You get up, out of your cot.

"I'm an intermediate explorer. I was hoping you'd join me, but you do you." He sounds a little disappointed. "See you later in life." Joshua gives a solemn salute, and walks off into the distance.

.
..
...

You live every day monotonously. Nothing is strange, but nothing is exciting.

You started as a janitor. 1 week.

You became a cafeteria worked. 8 months.

After that, the manager of Base Alpha's cafeteria. 4 years.

Then, the co-director of Base Alpha. 16 years.

This position doesn't change. You don't think it can. 27 years.

You retire. 42 years.

You live an uneventful life. You pass on painlessly in your sleep, with the regret of never seeing Joshua again. Never having a love life. Never having any connections at all. You say one final "Goodnight" as you close your eyes.
Ending 4/?.

"What's the need to say my name?" You respond.

He gives a calculated response. "For sake of The M.E.G, it is vital that we know your identity. To know if you are someone of no danger, or a person at all, is my job here. So please, tell my your name."

"I'm sorry, but why would I care about The M.E.G. I don't even know who you are!" You flip your arms up in the air.

"I'll repeat this one more time, before you will face consequences." He pauses. "What. Is. Your. Name."

"Fine. My name is John J. Johnson." You retort, sarcastically.

"Must I detain you?" He sighs.

"Noo," you continue, "There is no way I, of all people, that would be lying about my identity."

He comes towards you, "Please, put your hands behind your back."

What do you do?
Follow Instructions.
Run.

You put your hands behind your back, and follow all instructions you are given. There are no handcuffs, there is no jailcell, but there is a marker. You are given a bright orange lanyard that is tightened to a point that almost strangulation, but it is somehow breathable.

As you walk in silence, following him, everyone in the rudimentary camp is silent, and stares at you. You are suddenly shoved into a tent, and the door is zipped up behind you.

Listen to your soul.
Atone for your sins.
Rebel.

After getting up, all is still. You are forced to do work that shouldn't really something anyone would ever have to do. Nothing ever fun. Nothing ever exciting.

Years pass, you don't know how long exactly, but your sure an adult now. Now, one day, the man says something. "Get up. Follow me." You do so. He walks you to the cafeteria, and he sits on a table. You sit across the table from him. "My name is Joshua." He puts his hand out for a shake, and you grab his hand. "It may not be a pleasure yet, but I'll be your acquaintance. Mind telling me your real name?"

"Yeah."

Joshua gets up, you follow. He leads you to a tent, and gestures towards it. "You'll be sleeping in here." He pauses, then adds, "You have to make a choice." as he takes your orange lanyard off, "Do you want to stay as a civilian, or become a explorer?"

As you lie in a cot, you need to make your decision.
Become an explorer.
Stay as a civilian.

You unzip the tent, then make a break for it. Don't do what you are told. You try to escape.

"Hey!" You hear the man yell. They are catching up quickly.

You run like your life depends on it, running out of breath, and lungs burning.

Eventually, he catches up with you, and grabs you by the orange lanyard, strangling you, "Follow me. There's something you need to do." He states, suddenly.

Being forced to follow him, he leads you to who-knows-where. None of your questions have been answered, and they keep burning in your mind. He says "You have two choices. Stay as who you are now, or try to become an explorer." Then he pauses, "Actually, scratch that, there is no choice. We have a shortage of explorers right now."

You don't know which way you are being led, but the path doesn't change directions. Eventually, you come up to a sign that says "Level 1.1."

The man says "We're going in there. Follow me." He walks into a corridor, which the sign points to. I go in with him.

"Go. Through the corridor. Don't stop." He demands. All you can do is comply.

You walk though the corridor.

It gets weirder.

Stranger.

Glitchy.

Suddenly, you disappear into the glitches.
Ending 5/?.

In shock to the ferocity of the demand, your mind blanks, and you stay still, and utterly silent.

They repeat their demand, this time, more in fear, "Who are you? What is your name?"

You have nothing to say to them, but you mumble to yourself "Why are they treating me this way?"

Other members of the group look towards you. Staring. You back away slowly. The air becomes harder and heavier to breath, your hearts starts beating faster. They start walking towards you. It becomes a silent chase. You have nothing to say, as they come after you.

You have no choice.
Run.

You run, in complete and absolute exhaustion, panting at every step. Looking behind your back, they are right at your tail, not shaking off.

The lights shut off. The people start to slowly back off, and you pant as catch your breath.

Gasping for air, you hear a small noise, followed by seeing a large, glowing, smile. Your first instinct is to run in absolute panic. As you do, the smiler starts to catch up to you, in an unbeatable race. Just like your entire body, your heart races at a thousand miles an hour. There is the light ahead of you, along with that group of godforsaken people, but it feels like a never ending distance to someplace that doesn't contain these monsters.

You get mauled by the smiler. You die.
Ending 3/?.

You take the right path. There seems to be nothing different on this path than to the other you didn't take. You continue to walk, undeterred.

The lights shut off. It's silent.

Then you hear a small noise, followed by seeing a large, glowing, smile. Your first instinct is to run in absolute panic. As you do, the smiler starts to catch up to you, in an unbeatable race. Just like your entire body, your heart races at a thousand miles an hour. There is the light ahead of you, but it feels like a never ending distance to safety.

You get mauled by the smiler. You die.
Ending 2/?.

"On the dawn of the third night, time dies."

As you walk into base Alpha, something feels off. Even the instructor notices this. It feels both too noisy and too quiet at the same time. You hear next to no voices, yet the noises you do hear are so much louder than they should be. "This, isn't right." You say with an odd mixture of emotions.

"Yeah." Joshua replies.

The instructor walks ahead, and demands with a booming voice, "What is going on here?"

A short girl, responds shakily "Something- ah, is. Not good."

"And what is that supposed to mean?"

"It. uh, bad. Not good."

"Tell me god damn it!"

"Why-y are, you asking me?"

The instructor scowls, and walks off. You say a quick "sorry" to the girl, then follow.
