The Burning Sensation of Fear Stares Back at Me

Life is a blur, isn't it?

And when you can't help but wonder why you're even here, remember:

I will miss you when I leave, in the eternal journey.

I will miss you when I remember you, and our memories.

I will miss you, until the day you meet me in the wonderlands.

He couldn't have said those things. Not once has he said those things to me, not once has he meant them. He has never been there for me, but I was always there. Always, always, always there for him. And he left me.

"Leslie," Pieter sits at my shoulder, he's probably trying to comfort me, but it's not working. "I know that…" He pauses, taking short, quick breaths. He's doing better than me, I'll say. "I know it's hard, okay? You don't have to do this alone."

"I'm fine!" I say, with an obviously fake smile, and a sticky layer of fake happiness. I feel oppressed. "But, I - no - we have our jobs, we need to keep up. -"

"- The world sweeps by us, under our feet. -"

"- The longer we wait, the further it will be. -"

"- The further we will be, from our hope. - "

"- From our life." I finish. "William Brand, A Journey, Yet but a Second." I sight softly, more out of the relief of a feeling, of a weight I didn't even know I had, "Thank you, Pieter."

"What can I say?" He chuckles, tears streaming down his face, "They're my favorite author."

"Hey," I say.

"What is it?" Pieter responds.

"I want to finish what he started."

No, this can't be. I can't just let this happen. I can't blame them. I can't, I know I can't. I crumple up the letter and throw it on the ground. Tearing up as I stare into my ceiling, in the dark. Alone with my thoughts.
